Both born in 1985, Joyce Urbanus and Dax Roll are natives of the suburbs of Amsterdam. Roll studied marketing and communication at the University of Amsterdam, while Urbanus specialized in styling, fashion, and interior at an academy called Artemis. They met eight years ago and fell in love while Roll was working for a high-end fashion label and Urbanus worked for an interior architect. Urbanus decided to start working freelance for several clients, and with Roll’s attention for design always present, they found out they came to the best ideas together. Roll decided to quit his job and the two founded Nicemakers in 2011.
Nicemakers is an interior design firm with a team of 10 people (architects, project managers and designers) with Urbanus and Roll leading the company as creative directors. Always warm and elegant, Nicemakers style is about finding the right balance between custom designed furniture and vintage pieces. Urbanus and Roll prefer to use only materials like real wood, natural stones, or products that are made by hand like beautifully glazed tiles or handmade fabrics. Light plays an important role in their work, together with soft luxurious fabrics and rich colors—and there’s always a bit of 1970’s inspiration.
