As design director for Austin’s Bunkhouse Group for 11 years, Tenaya Hills has seen the small company grow from its roots in a garage apartment behind a pizza joint with one hotel, the beloved Hotel San Jose, to its reputation as one of the most revered boutique hotel companies in the US today, with more properties in Austin, Marfa, San Antonio, San Francisco, Todos Santos, Baja, Mexico and soon Atlanta and New Orleans. Over the recent growth of Austin, Bunkhouse’s homegrown properties have fostered the true spirit of the city with their design and cultural programming, and the group seeks to do the same in whatever market they find themselves in. Hills worked closely with Bunkhouse CCO Liz Lambert to bring all of these properties to life, and with the properties post-opening to help maintain the original design intent. She earned her master’s in historic preservation from the University of Texas School of Architecture.
